Computer Sciences : Coding
Our second grade classroom is working hard to become involved with coding, understanding how important it is to our future and as a very interesting science.
We began our learning journey with some coding vocabulary: We learned the words modeled our understanding of the words and used drama ( 1 minute challenges ) to put the words and meaning into our bodies. Wow! This is a great way to begin our year! Stay tuned for more as we code even further.
Code. org - Your student has a login. We are learning so much!!

One Minute Challenge/ Students discuss/ Share / Create a tableau as a collaboration/ then, write their understandings. Coding is a great opportunity for our future and our students remain on the cutting edge!!!!
Tableau- to show our great understanding of the answer to text questions. Levels, facial expression, a focal point and the use of multiple body parts is fantastic!
Second Grade Scientists at work
2018/19 Our class of second graders works hard to learn some of the wonderful uses of Hawaiian plants. We discuss our responsibility to our future generations to carry the knowledge forward.
Some of the plants we studied are:
Ulu Trees - Breadfruit Trees/ a great food source for many people.
Coconut Palm/ coconut fruit, water and many woven products like baskets rope and much more
Kukui Nut- CandleNut Tree/ to make Leis, use oil to make candles and torches.
Mango Tree/ produces delicious fruit, can make relishes, jellies, and spreads for other foods, brings pleasure to people.
Noni Tree/ Makes traditional medicines, tonic and juice drinks, can also make soaps and lotions from the seed oil.
Koa Tree/ The largest growing native tree provides wood that makes great furniture, crafts, boats, homes and tikis(sculptures) .
We learned to sketch with detail. We become scientists who are clear and understand the importance of being exact. We discuss the reasons we use particular colors and shapes to add to our pictures.
Observing Magical Moments in and from our Scientific Garden:
We have discovered the importance of nutrient rich soil and its value to all life.

STEAM = Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Math
Full Steam ahead in the U-Neeck 2nd grade classroom :)
Instructional Overview S.T.E.A.M. 2nd Grade:
1)What is Pollination? Essential Question discussion - How do we find pollen in a flower?
2)Pollinators move Pollen: Learn parts of flower- use dissection, outline and discuss
the importance of labeling accurately.
3)Materials have Properties explore and describe materials by properties, record data
4)Define Problem, Propose Solutions Test materials for ability to effectively transfer pollen, data collect
5)Work like an Ag Engineer Use real flowers to cross-pollinate
6)Design a hand pollinator complete materials test/data Design pollinator for a model flower
Use mathematics to measure putting an importance on precision.
7)Test and Improve Use data and observations to score design, and improve multiple trials
